Sampling missions
I have been involved in three major sampling campaigns over the past 12 years. I also like to sample interesting rocks, mostly magmatic, everywhere I travel for use in teaching and research projects.
Tutupaca and Yucamane volcanoes, South Peru. I spent one week in the field in 2014 as part of an ongoing collaboration with Peruvian colleagues to sample and map dacitic deposits of recent eruptions.

During my postdoc at MIT, I spent six weeks sampling volcanic rocks in the Southern Cascades (Mount Shasta, Newberry Volcano, Medicine Lake Volcano) with Tim Grove's group in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Igneous processes in the field
A variety of pictures of magmatic processes taken during fieldtrips. I started assembling them for use in my Igneous Petrology class.
Enchanted Rock State Park, TX. Weathering of a pink granite batholith - and exceptional night skies.
Ploumanac'h (Brittany, France). Multiple concentric granitic intrusions. Intrusive contacts, mingling, igneous layering.
Maine Coast (ME, USA). Excellent outcrops of magma mixing in deep crustal magma chambers now exposed by erosion.
|
Mono-Inyo Craters, CA. A chain of very young silicic volcanoes east of the Sierra Nevada.
Boston area (MA, USA). Spectacular mingling, fayalite pegmatites and a layered gabbroic intrusion.
Alpe Arami (Switzerland). Fresh garnet lherzolites and nice migmatites.
|
Fisher Lake area (Sierra Nevada, CA). Spectacular comb-layering and concentric layering (orbs).
